What else did they say we couldn’t do?

Perhaps 2020 could be remembered as the year that work changed for the better. After all, a “breakdown” can often turn out to be a breakthrough.

There’s no shying away from the fact that we are in a dark moment now though. Whilst privilege affords some of us safer foundations, no one is unaffected by the social pandemic - 79% of people in the UK say that not seeing people is affecting their mental health.

Mental illness is not only a crushing problem for the NHS, it’s paralysing a great many businesses. 60% of UK adults say that their mental health has gotten worse in lockdown. At least half a million more people in the UK will experience a mental health difficulty over the next year.

We are being challenged to transform ourselves and our businesses

This is a moment of reinvention - let’s leverage it to create workplaces that are life-enhancing. We can do this together; we can smudge out the boundaries between industries, reach over the walls of competition and whisper “Tough, isn’t it?“.

Work shouldn’t be an exhausting or self-destructive activity; work should be the chance to live our life with purpose and make the world better for everyone. Work could be the way to vibrant mental health, the place where our whole imperfect selves are seen, valued, and understood by our team.

Can we use this moment to catapult our teams into a mentally healthy working world? Things that everyone said were “impossible” 6 months ago have been done...which begs the question…

What else did they say we couldn’t do?

If you could make one change that would improve your wellbeing and create a healthier working environment, what would it be?

Imagine if you went after this goal, relentlessly for 90 days, not alone, but in a diverse tribe of senior leaders, collaborating across UK industries. What if you had the time and space to co-create solutions, in a safe, supportive structure, where you and other leaders could challenge one another to upend obstacles, uproot unhelpful habits and stay on track.
